Zimbabwean govt quells rumour of fuel price increase

Harare, Feb. 28, 2019 (Xinhua/NNN) The Zimbabwean Government on Thursday moved in to quell rumours of an imminent fuel price increase, which had prompted more motorists to join queues in a bid to fill up.

Energy and Power Development Minister Joram Gumbo issued a statement on state television that the messages circulating on social media to the effect that new fuel prices were only awaiting presidential assent were not true.

“The information is not correct. The government is not at the moment intending to raise any prices,’’ he said.

Although the fuel queues are not as long as those experienced late 2018 and early 2019, motorists are struggling to get either petrol or diesel from service stations.

Those intending to use either cash or electronic means of payment are also feeling hard done by some service stations which are only serving customers who would have prepaid for the fuel.

The government at the weekend apologised to the motoring public for a “logistical glitch’’ in the procurement of diesel, whereby fuel retailers were said to have ordered more petrol than diesel, resulting in the shortage of diesel.

“The situation has been attended to and normalcy in the fuel retail sector is expected to have been attained within the next few hours,’’ the ministry said.

Authorities maintained that there was enough bonded fuel in the country, but transmission to retailers had remained limited because of foreign currency shortages. (Xinhua/NNN)
